NEPA Member Services

Annual Convention and Trade Show
NEPA's annual Convention and Trade Show is among the largest in the country, drawing more than 1,000 newspaper professionals for two days of workshops, seminars, panels and roundtable discussions on every aspect of the community newspaper industry.

Network with your colleagues and hear from industry leaders to learn new approaches to old problems, old solutions to new problems and ways to avoid problems altogether - old or new. Seminars from newspaper basics to advanced topics are designed for publishers, managers, reporters, editors, advertising representatives, photographers, production and circulation staffers.

At our trade show you can learn about and see the latest in publishing technology with hands-on demonstrations of state-of-the-art equipment, allowing you to "kick the tires" before making a major investment. To receive a copy of our Program Guide or a reservation form, please call our offices at 617-373-5610 or e-mail b.reed@nepa.org.

Better Newspaper Contest
Promoting excellence in community newspapers is at the heart of the NEPA mission. One way we do it is with our annual Better Newspaper Contest, which has grown to be among the biggest and most respected contests of its kind in the country, drawing more than 6,000 entries in some 60 plus categories including Newspaper of the Year and Journalist of the Year. By entering, your newspaper and your hard-working staffers get a shot at winning the recognition they deserve. And a First Place award is a good way of reminding your readers about your commitment to excellence.

Advertising Networks
Join with the more than 245 newspapers that are sharing in the profits from the New England Classified Advertising Network. Participating newspapers receive semiannual profit shares and the opportunity to offer advertisers a way to reach 4.7 million readers weekly. When your newspaper sells an ad into the network, you keep 50 percent - as much as $137.50 per 25-word ad.

Your newspaper can also take advantage of our newest advertising program, 2x2 New England. This program is similar to NECAN except the advertiser is getting a 2x2 display ad. Your newspaper receives a portion of the annual profit for participating as well as a 50 percent commission - as much as $475 per ad - on any ad sold into network.

Committee Work
The New England Press Association is a volunteer organization that relies on its members to take an active role in developing, planning and executing association functions. There are eight standing committees open to any employee of a NEPA-member newspaper. Committees are: Advertising/Marketing; Contest; Convention Planning; Diversity; Legislative Affairs; Technology; Publications; and Scholarship/Intern.

Display Advertising Placements
Add more sales power to your staff and extra income to your bottom line without additional expense. Our ONE-ORDER ONE-PAYMENT display advertising placement service makes it easy and attractive for advertisers to target their ad dollars in community newspapers. Working with advertising agencies, we represent your newspaper providing rates, quotes, insertion orders, tearsheeting and billing. Every month NEPA brings plus advertising linage to hundreds of newspapers throughout the six-state region.

Job Placement Service
NEPA maintains a job placement service for newspaper professionals, working with member newspapers that need skilled employees in all phases of the business including management, advertising, editorial, production and circulation. We keep resumes on file from job seekers, and members advertise job openings free in the NEPA Bulletin, the only newspaper trade journal reaching every newspaper in New England.

Legal Hotline
It's like having your own staff media attorney. One call to the hotline could save your newspaper thousands of dollars in legal fees. Both pre- and post-publication advice is offered in libel, privacy, and other First Amendment issues. Top media attorneys in each New England state have signed on to staff the hotline and field calls free of charge as long as questions can be answered without extensive legal research or investigation.

Libel Insurance
Excellent libel insurance coverage at an affordable, discounted rate is available to NEPA members. Provided through a pioneer in media liability insurance with more than 60 years of experience, your policy can be tailored to your newspaper's specific needs including basic coverage for libel and slander; invasion of privacy; infringement of copyright; plagiarism; and media personal injury. Options include coverage for commercial printing errors and omissions. Without adequate insurance coverage your First Amendment rights, and your newspaper, could be lost.

Marketing/Demographic Data
Give your sales reps more ammunition with market and readership data that shows potential advertisers why community newspapers are a great value. NEPA periodically commissions a six-state marketing and readership survey to provide member newspapers with specific regional data, including demographics, which graphically illustrates for potential advertisers why they should be reaching your readers.

NEPA Bulletin
The only newspaper trade journal reaching every newspaper in New England, the NEPA Bulletin will keep you and your staff up-to-date about issues affecting community newspapers. Industry news, commentary, and how-to information from nationally recognized newspaper specialists are delivered every month. Member newspapers may subscribe for multiple copies to insure the NEPA Bulletin goes to every department at your newspaper.

NEPA's Network
Among the most valuable aspects of membership is the ability to tap a network of newspaper professionals joined in the common interest of publishing quality newspapers. Got a question or a problem concerning any aspect of your publishing operation? A call to the NEPA office will get you the answers, often putting you in touch with colleagues and consultants who understand your business and are glad to offer assistance to fellow members.

Press Cards & Decals
Annual NEPA press cards and decals are available to members for each employee.
